Letter to Sheryl
Dear Sheryl,
The chances of you happening upon this web site are very unlikely, but I feel compelled to post this letter to you anyway. Some may think that posting it is a nice gesture and others may view it as trite and hopelessly optimistic. The reality is that there are probably better odds of me winning the lottery than you actually reading this, but I digress...
Back to the point, I have been a fan of your music for years (I bet you've never heard that before...ha). I often wonder how one individual can possess so much talent and honestly I envy that. The fact that you have made a successful career for yourself through hard work and perseverance is an achievement in itself. Especially since your early years were plagued with the belief that there were only a select number of slots for female recording artists.
I also respect the fact that it seems that you have maintained your composure during stressful periods in your career where rumors were circulated not only about your music, but your personal life as well. I admire the fact that you have been able to maintain your own identity and not let the downside of fame alter your drive or vision.
Also, I admire the fact that you are very vocal about the bouts of depression that you have faced in the past. Your story may someday inspire someone that feels like they are experiencing something similar to seek help. Because of your story, two years ago I created a series of mixed media collages entitled, "Issues that Face Our Generation" in this series I included a depiction of your struggle with depression. It utilizes a combination of black and white images, charcoal, pastels, gel medium, and one element of color which is deep blue.
Thank you for being so great and patient when I met you. I was glad I got the opportunity to hand deliver the print I mentioned above to you at the Lilith Fair in Mansfield, MA. Again, thank you for all of the music and entertainment you have given the world. Best wishes for continued success in the future.
Sincerely,
Jess
